The Third Statute of Lithuania - the first translation into the Lithuanian language

The Third Statute of Lithuania is the most famous Lithuanian intellectual achievement of all time. It is a kind of Constitution that has become a symbol of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. An exceptional example of codification of law, recognized as an example for all of democratic Europe. The Third Statute was valid from 1588 to 1840. It became the most important book for a Lithuanian citizen, lying on the shelf next to the Holy Scriptures for hundreds of years. Even during the uprising of 1863 against the Russians, a Lithuanian defined himself as a person who loves freedom and respects the Third Statute of Lithuania.


The first translation of the Third Statute of Lithuania into Lithuanian appeared at the end of 2023. The deluxe print edition is available at Pegasus bookstores. The Lithuanian translation of the Third Statute together with various additional information is available free of charge on the website www.3statutas.lt .


Institute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (www.ldki.lt) has organized the translation of the Third Statute of Lithuania into Lithuanian since 2016. The main translator is Ričardas Jaramičius (Vytautas Magnus University), assisted by Jevgenij Machovenko (Vilnius University). The author of the idea and the organizer of the activities is Rūstis Kamuntavičius. The translation was supported by the law office Glimstedt and the publishing house Alma littera.
